The essential role of water

Water plays an important role in avoiding the formation of kidney stones, as it helps keep the urine diluted to avoid waste products forming into kidney stones. This is why in addition to specific dietary advice or medication, doctors advise people with a history of kidney stones to drink at least 2L of water per day to reduce recurrence risk, whatever the kind of stones.

Dehydration may also increase the risk kidney stones, therefore after a physical activity, during the summer, or if you are living in a warm climate, you should particularly increase your intake of water, to make up for fluid loss through perspiration. Tea, juice, coffee or soft drinks may constitute the fluid intake, but water is the healthiest option.
