The role of diet

An improved or specially formulated diet may help to prevent the formation of more kidney stones. You may be asked to change your amount of salt, calcium, oxalate, protein, potassium in your diet, according to the chemical form of stones you have formed.

For example, if your kidney stones are mainly composed of calcium, it is advised to achieve normal calcium intakes (between 800 and 1000 mg a day), and so to increase calcium intake if you take too little calcium or to decrease your intake if you exceed the recommendation. It is also advised to limit salt intake as it can increase calcium elimination in the urine.

   Reducing the amount of animal protein (meat, poultry or fish) may help to prevent the formation of uric acid stones. You may also be prescribed medication to change the levels of acid, or alkaline, in your urine.
