Types of kidney stones

The kind of stones will influence the preventive measures to avoid recurrence. For example dietary recommendations are different according to the kind of stones!

  • Calcium stones: This is the most common type of kidney stones made of calcium combined either with oxalate or phosphate. It represents about 80% of stones in western countries.

  • Uric acid stones: Uric acid is a waste product resulting from normal body functioning. But when there is too much in urine it can cause uric acid stones. People who eat a high-protein diet may be at risk of forming uric acid stone.

  • Struvite stones: this stone is the result of a urinary tract infection. A UTI may affect the chemical balance of the urine. Women are more likely to develop struvite stones then men.

  • Cystine stones: Cystine is an amino acid in protein that does not dissolve well in urine. This is a rare condition which requires life-long attention and therapy.
