Kidneys at risk? >> Urinary trat infections (UTI) >> Prevention

Some scientific data suggests that increasing fluid intake could prevent recurrence of UTIs as more frequent urination will help to flush out bacteria. Indeed, frequent urination may help reduce risk: bacteria could develop more easily if urine sits in the bladder too long.

Hygiene and lifestyle are also important to help reduce UTI recurrence:

  •  After using the toilet, wiping from front to back helps to prevent bacteria from the bowel from coming in contact with and then spreading to the urinary tract.
  • Practise good hygiene by washing your genitals every day.
  • Empty your bladder before going to bed at night to avoid urine stagnating in the bladder encouraging the bacteria to grow whilst you sleep.
