What happens when kidneys stop functioning?

When the kidneys stop functioning normally, wastes accumulate progressively and intoxicate the body.

That’s why people with reduced kidney function, such as in chronic kidney disease, need dialysis or transplantation in the late stages of the disease to replace the kidneys’ blood-cleaning function.

They may also need to take medication to maintain the production of red blood cells, healthy blood pressure and bone mass.
