Risk factors

Different risk factors increase the risk for UTI:

  • Gender (females are more at risk)
  • Sexual behaviour - if you are a female, sexual intercourse can irritate the urethra, allowing bacteria to travel more easily through it and into the bladder.
  • Use of certain types of contraception such as a diaphragm
  • Age (older individuals and young women are more prone to urine infections)
  • Family history of UTI
  • Diabetes or other chronic conditions that impair the immune system
  • Prolonged use of catheters (a tube inserted into the bladder to drain away urine)
  • Recurrent kidney stones

For questions, concerns or advice about UTIs, please consult your doctor!
